Alexandra Friedman

Alex Friedman creates environments for performance - on screen, on stage, and on the body. She is especially excited about new work and having an open collaborative process. Alex aims to engage diverse audiences, exploding their preconceived notions of what film and theatre can be, and is interested in media that embrace the tactile craft of design and the beauty of the handmade.

Born in St Petersburg, Russia, Alex is a native of New York City and an alumna of Brandeis University and CalArts. Her design work for theatre has been presented at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and throughout the SF Bay Area and LA.

Alex recently completed jobs as a set designer on a new series for Bix Pix and on Guillermo del Toro’s new stop-motion Pinocchio film, produced by Shadowmachine and Netflix. Her first feature as a set designer, LAIKA’s stop-motion Missing Link, won the Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature in 2020. She is currently open to new opportunities.

Well, after 18 wonderful months, I wrapped up my work on Pinocchio at the end of February. The last year was often stressful in its strangeness and uncertainty, but I was so thankful to not only be working at all, but be part of a film I’m really excited about with a team I adore. I can’t wait to see it and share it with everyone! Now I’m contemplating what’s next (and am open to projects!), but first @mrjonathanpotter and I took a few quiet days away on the #OregonCoast, at a cottage with no wifi and a wood-burning fireplace. I thought my #LomoInstant camera was acting up and accidentally exposed a few frames to light before I realized the batteries had died... oops! I’m very relieved about the results of the presidential election, but emotional fatigue — from continuing to practice social distancing since March, missing friends and family I don’t know when I’ll next be able to see in person, worrying about the state of our nation and the world, never-ending uncertainty about the future, etc etc — hit me hard this past weekend. I was lucky enough to be able to take a day away with @mrjonathanpotter and visit #mountsthelens. It was breathtaking and left me feeling shockingly refreshed — pictures really don’t do it justice.
